White Chocolate
Michael D. Helzner
White Chocolate stems from an extraordinary and unusual perspective-a Jewish doctor fighting the medical system to serve patients that are almost exclusively low-income African Americans. This perspective allows Dr. Helzner to tell compassionate tales of culture clashes and the frustrations of medicine that would not otherwise have affected him-insurance hassles, racism and poverty. A book that began as epistolary divorce explanations to Helzner's children, White Chocolate is a timeless portrayal of issues that affect everyone, in one way or another.
"Stanley was one of the nicest patients a doctor could ever have. At age thirty-seven, this poor gentleman caught a simple cold. In a rare complication, he developed a full-blown viral syndrome that attacked his heart, rendering it almost useless. We got him on the heart transplant waiting list after exhausting all other means. He was scheduled on the following Monday for the surgery. He died that Saturday. Ten months prior he had been training for a marathon race."
Bio: Dr. Michael Helzner was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he still resides and is a practicing Osteopath. Dr. Helzner has two children and White Chocolate is his first book.
