Valley of The Shadow

Erich Anton Helfert

A fourteen-year-old boy witnesses the upheavals, tragedies and displacement sweeping central Europe just prior to and right after World War II. He experiences occupation by the Russians, dispossession and displacement by a new Czech government, and the tragic loss of his father and brother. He and his mother struggle on, sustained by her faith and courage, but shaken by narrow escapes from death camps, daily deprivation and danger, and family betrayal. Eventually, the beginnings of a new life emerge.

This book is particularly relevant today as the world is again witnessing ethnic cleansing, factional strife, and human suffering in many parts of the globe.

Review: "A poignant autobiographical memoir..."
Publishers Weekly

"Valley of the Shadow is exceptionally well written. It reads like a novel, except it is better because the story is true. In fact, it is an autobiography full of color, courage and character. Told in an unforgettable way, it takes the reader from frustration, anger and sadness in post war central Europe to the pews of a church in San Francisco. Read it!"
Dr. Dennis L. Bark
Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University

"Dr. Helfert's book sets a strong moral tone. It would appear to be entirely free to thoughts of revenge, and promises to forge bonds of humanity with those, participants and bystanders alike, who lived through the terrible 1938-1945 years. I am in profound agreement with these aims; the book is an important contribution to the literature of our times."
Dr. Heinz K. Henisch
Pennsylvania State University

"This book, much more than an autobiography, offers a rare opportunity to view, after more than five decades, what Czechoslovak president Dr. Benes named "ethnic cleansing." The reader will be moved not only by a boy's vivid story but a humanely inspiring and politically thought-provoking tale."
Dr. Fritz-Peter Habel
Historian and documentary author, Munich
