Sweet Poison of Misused Wine
John Jasper
It is the year 2000, and political parties in the United States are gearing up for the next presidential election. Senator Cyrus, a right-wing politician with an anti-environmentalist stance, is making a bid for the presidency, and he stands a good chance of winning with the support of several industrial corporations. When a popular newsman is gruesomely murdered at the Kentucky Derby, Senate aide John Scott suspects that the death may be connected to other recent terrorists attacks within the U.S.-and possibly to Cyrus's campaign. Determined to prove his theories, John enlists the help of Assistant District Attorney Kate Taulbee. Kate, a fiery lawyer with her own agenda, questions John's theories, but is determined to use the case to advance her own career. Together they begin to untangle a web of political ties between the Derby murder and an international plot to take over the White House and exploit the nation's natural resources. The investigation leads John and Kate from Kentucky to Montana to Paris-and ultimately into the arms of each other.
Review: "Jasper knows his territory inside and out. Sweet Poison of Misused Wine is full of the kind of detail that makes his story vital and alive. You might come away from his first novel wondering, 'What have we here? Another Ludlum?' " -Gary Devon, author of Lost, Wedding Night, and Bad Desires
