"The Kugelmass Episode" by Woody Allen tells the story of Sidney Kugelmass, City College professor, who by way of a magician's box in Brooklyn, is transported into the pages of Madame Bovary. In "Crystal River" by Charlie Smith, Harold and Jack, two young drifters and sometimes lovers, light out from their shack in the Georgia pine woods for a river journey of fishing, camping, and loafing. Down river, they come upon a young woman standing on the riverbank, naked, and holding a .410 shotgun. Sexual aggression leads to sexual abandon in this unusual story reminiscent of Truffaut's Jules and Jim. In Margaret Atwood's The Man From Mars, a plain looking, overweight woman becomes the object of desire of a bespectacled, threadbare student who doggedly pursues her until his persistence transforms how she is viewed by her acquaintances.
Bio: MIKE NAGLER teaches Creative Writing and Film History at Caсada College in northern California. His is the co-editor, with BILL SWANSON of Wives and Husbands, an anthology of short fiction about marriage. Bill Swanson teaches English and Humanities at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Washington.
