Some Jazz Friends
Pete Clute , Jim Goggin
Authors Clute and Goggin invite you to trip down their memory lane in smoke-filled clubs to the strains of wailing saxes, bebop piano, jazz hot and cool, and amazing riffs if virtuoso. The "lowdown" on some of San Francisco's jazz greats they have known as well as non-musicians who made significant contributions to the world of jazz, such as Turk Murphy, Burt Bales, Jack Crook, Edna Fischer Hayes, and Billy Newman. Sally Rand, the infamous Bay Area madam, even makes an appearance herein.
The manager told Turk during the break not to allow a black man on stage with the band. A few weeks later, Scat Man [Crothers] was once again on the bandstand. That night Turk was fired without notice. Turk's colorblind nature was such that the only question he'd ask was "Can they play?"
I liked the way he [Bob Scobey] played, and he was easy to work with, you know. What could be sweeter? I can't say why, or how, you know, I think part of it has to do with, I am very much of a group player, and my playing would be helped then if I hear compatible sounds around me. Bob wasn't wishy-washy.
Bio: PETE CLUTE is one of the foremost ragtime piano players in the world. He and Turk Murphy co-founded the famous jazz nightclub, Earthquake McGoon's. JIM GOGGIN is a retired banker dedicated to the preservation of West Coast jazz and its performers. He founded the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation.
