Reaching the Summit

Catherine MacDonald

Debbie Burke seems to have it all—a mansion in Pacific Heights, a maid, a personal trainer, a hefty trust fund. She spends her days shopping and socializing and trying to be the perfect wife and mother. Her world is turned upside-down, though, when she discovers her husband is having an affair. He leaves her for the other woman, and Debbie receives another shock when she finds out she has no money—her husband, Sam, had slowly been draining her trust fund to pay for their lavish lifestyle.

Devastated and broke, Debbie and her daughter, Jenny, head to Lake Tahoe for some healing. Debbie soon finds herself waiting tables and struggling to make ends meet. She takes up running as a way to soothe her troubled spirit, and as her body grows stronger, she taps into an inner strength she never knew she had. Debbie decides to train for the Silver State Marathon, believing that if she can complete the race, she will prove to herself and her daughter that she has not been broken by the divorce and that she has the strength to make it on her own.

“‘There he is!’ Debbie watched her daughter shriek with joy as they pulled up to the condo complex Sam was staying in. Jenny turned to her. ‘Bye, Mom. I’ll see you in a few days.’ Debbie felt her heart ache as she watched Jenny run to Sam, his face breaking into a wide grin as he scooped her up. Sam waved over to Debbie, but she couldn’t bring herself to wave back. She just sat, detached from her body and emotions, and watched him stand there, looking so good...”
