Parts Unknown
John Dilmore Jr.
PARTS UNKNOWN is a mystery in more ways than one. A bank is robbed in the small town of Bottleneck, Texas, and the police force is stumped. What they don't know is that one of their own men has done it, an officer named Carter Jackson. Carter's uncle is sick and the costs of medical care have driven Carter to desperate measures; Carter has already been on shaky ground after dealing with a bloody shoot-out a few months earlier and the post-traumatic stress that has ensued. Also thrown in for good measure is a girlfriend with some big secrets of her own. When blackmail and lying become a part of Carter's daily life, the real mystery is how much of this he can take before he cracks.
Carter hung [his] commendation back on the wall, then walked over to the window and stared out at the quiet street. It would be several hours before the tiny south-Texas town began waking up. He lay on the bed and began searching for familiar faces amid the swirls of the plaster ceiling. Finding none, he rolled over onto his side. "Things always look better in the morning," he mumbled into his pillow.
Review: "With low-key action and laid-back prose...[A] satisfying effort from a new author." Library Journal
