One of these Mornings

Betty Bernard

One of These Mornings is the moving story of Melanie, a young woman from a once-rich and thoroughly dysfunctional family. Melanie escapes by hitchhiking across the country, and she ends up in California, pregnant and married to Ray, a man "irresistibly attracted to women" and busy hanging out with drug dealers. When Melanie slides into post partum depression, she is hospitalized, which gives her time to reflect on her life and empower her to make the changes she needs to survive. Told in present tense and in flashbacks, One of These Mornings, is a beautiful account of how life doesn't always turn out how you planned, and how that isn't necessarily a detriment.

"It was how he had played the night she met him: the raga-like melody built to a frenzied peak and as gradually dissipated. Melanie was certain that his fingers would fly from his guitar and bound around the room....He was from California, the place she had dreamed of visiting since she was fifteen. This information alone had impressed Melanie's two roommates; on that basis, they had invited this stranger, Ray, back to the apartment they shared on West Ninety-Seventh and Broadway."
