Murder in their Midst
Sharon Abel-Halvorsen
Ted Crannkey has made a hobby of socially blackmailing his neighbors in the luxury condominium complex of Seaside Villas. When he has a heart attack on the grounds, one of them hastens his demise by bludgeoning him with one of his own handweights. Without physical evidence, Detective Darren Marshall and his partner are forced to explore the dirty little secret of each of the residents. The police realize that solving the case will depend upon discovering the killer's unclear motive. Everyone in the gated community had a mild motive for murdering Ted. When the second murder occurs, no one seems to have reason to have killed the sexy, young newcomer. The detective's inquiries take them from the heights of wealthy comfort to the criminal underbelly of a tourists' paradise, before a chance remark shows Darren that his own way of looking at the crimes has obscured the truth.
"As the coastal road curved smoothly past the churning waters of the deep bay, Darren caught sight of Seaside Villas and its complex wall, coiled along the top of the cliff above. This confusing case and, in fact, the whole compound, had begun to take in an aura of evil for him, like a menacing snake in this tropical Eden. He knew that somewhere among its residents was a ruthless killer, yet every time he thought he had grasped the truth, it slithered away from him."
