Long Way Home, The

James R. Schultz

James R. Schultz, former WWII naval officer, recounts his life as a young man faced with the challenges and responsibilities of the great war. "Looking back to the war years...I wonder about the enthusiasm for military service among the people of my age...The Navy had given us minimal training and thrown us into the fray with the expectation that we could cope. By and large we did. As we looked around we saw a 25-year old to be commanding a multi-million dollar ship with a crew of 72 men."
from the Epilogue

Review: The Long Way Home tells a wonderfully true and readable WWII story of the transformation of a young college student into a naval officer and the captain of his ship. Jim Schultz subtly reminds us that the nation and the U.S. Navy routinely invested enormous responsibility in young inexperienced men in WWII, and that they not only performed well, but in many instances, heroically. Since America will never again mobilize for war and call upon its youth to the extent it did for WWII, it is well that Jim has preserved and shared with us his naval experiences and those of his shipmates.

Rear Admiral, USNR, (Ret)

As a former Navy officer I was able to identify with the author's fascinating account of his experience. His stories and anecdotes, drawn from the day to day lives of the officers and crew of the ships on which he served, held my interest from start to finish. He describes the excitement, the boredom, the humor and fears of life at sea in a world at war. His book will be of interest not only to those of us who served in World War II but also to others who would like to gain more insight into this significant chapter of our nation's history.
Raymond Philip Shafer
former Governor of Pennsylvania
