Klaus and Max
David L. Bruce
Klaus and Max is about how friendship can counteract cruelty and evil. Klaus is a Roman Catholic. Max is a Jew. Their friendship begins when they are children on neighboring Bavarian farms, and their bond endures through-and despite-the horrors of Nazism. As teenagers, they witness the Munich demonstration when Hitler is arrested and imprisoned. As young adults, Klaus becomes a research physician while Max protects as many of his people as he can. Just when it appears that Max will escape Germany and Klaus will lie low until the madness blows over, Klaus is drafted for medical duty in Auschwitz, and there he finds Max a prisoner, about to be marched into a gas chamber. Klaus must then decide whether to take action, or watch his beloved friend be murdered.
Review: "Klaus and Max [are] remarkable friends...One a Jew...One a Christian....Their love transcended the pain. A must read." -Monsignor Thomas Hartman and Rabbi Marc Gellman, "The God Squad"
