Kingdom Come

Laura Chester

It was the worst Christmas of her life for many reasons. With little to keep her on Beacon Hill, Joanna Hawkins leaves her comfortable, false life and heads west, into often threatening territory. Here she takes over her aunt’s small cattle ranch, and soon rediscovers her teenage flame, Samuel Harrigan Sixkiller Mendoza, a complicated loner with a jealous temper. Kingdom Come is not only a contemporary western with a Traviata twist, but the story of a woman in search of her mother, while struggling to become one to her own estranged children. Fast-moving, heart-breaking fiction, Chester’s best to date.

Review: Praise for Earlier Work:

“The lucid grace of Laura Chester’s writing is always a singular pleasure.” -Robert Creeley, on The Story of the Lake

“This is powerful stuff, often beautifully obscure, with undercurrents that constantly tug at the shoals of sanity.” - Marie Kuda on Bitches Ride Alone, Booklist

“This narrator invents a free-flowing, associative style, at once a hypnotic literary technique, a liberating ethic and a feminine metaphysic, desire pulsating in the everyday. The sheer accuracy of her poetic prose entices the reader to take this art purely on its own terms.” -Eric Mendelsohn on Bitches Ride Alone, American Book Review

Bio: LAURA CHESTER has been writing, editing and publishing poetry, fiction and non-fiction since the early 70’s. Chester grew up in Wisconsin, and now travels between Patagonia, Arizona and Alford, Massachusetts.
