J. M. Dean
Nineteen-year-old Karen is plagued with a domineering father and a milquetoast mom. She intensifies her conflict through four "entities" she imagines that speak to her: Spirit Father and Mother Clone, who represent her toxic parents; Piggy, Karen's voice of self-criticism; and Clarion, her guardian angel, who gives relief from the other harsh voices. After a suicide attempt, Karen is forced into a hospital, where a tough, but understanding psychiatrist helps her integrate these entities into her own personality.
"And what about me?" said Mother the Clone. "Am I like her?" "You're a fake mother," answered Karen. "I suppose you think I'm not your real father," said Spirit Father. "You little shit. You are a dirty daughter." "Let's go eat some ice cream," said Piggy. "Karen, come and eat dinner," called her other mother. Karen blushed...What a stupid dream!
"I hate the way I look," said Diana. "My skin is too pale, and my eyes are the ugliest color I've ever seen. My breasts are floppy and huge, and even my navel is gross. My twat is ugly and smelly, and my feet look like flippers on a seal." "You're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen, Diana. Live with it," said Karen.
