Invisible Weapons

Michael Wolfe

In these fictional travel stories a young American named Evett Stone chronicles his exploits in North Africa. As the book begins we find Stone in Morocco, strapped for funds. In the city of Tangier he takes a job driving a cab at night for a local Arab. For eighteen months he works and saves to leave. He is the only foreign cabbie in the city.

His nights become a cast of faces framed in rearview mirrors. His fares become the focus of the book. Their destinations lead him through the dark twisting backstreets of a city steeped in mystery. As in Turgenev's Hunting Sketches these stories unfold sequentially, while their narrator goes about his business. Along the way a witch's hex, a scrap of Moslem music, hustlers, beggars, whores, a slavery racket and a buried skull entangle Stone in a labyrinth of harrowing effects that are often comic. Behind them, Tangier emerges as a dreamscape where for every concrete object some hidden force exists, and invisible weapon, as real as the pavement Evett drives down, and more dangerous. 0887390005D.doc

Bio: MICHAEL WOLFE has published three books of verse and a travel journal set in Africa. He has caught an alien world for us here, and pinned its action firmly to the page, in prose as hard and lucid as a windshield.
