Honda Dream
Liam Patrick Galbraith
Set in Westminster, California (Little Saigon), Honda Dream follows the escapades of two detectives: Le Duc Tran, a former ARVN captain who came to the U.S. thirteen years after the Vietnam War's end; and Steve Delgado, a Mexican-American and former LAPD cop, young enough to be the son Tran lost in the war. Dong-bao Detective Agency is asked by the victim's widow to investigate the violent murder of her husband, a prominent Chinese-Vietnamese businessman who happens to have been the former assistant chief of police in Saigon during the war years.
What seems a simple home invasion by an Asian gang turns out to be a plot involving arms and immigrant smuggling with ties to Hong Kong Triads and the new Chinese government. The quick-paced story moves between Westminster, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver, B.C., with occasional flashbacks to pre-1975 Siagon, and deals with the adjustment of immigrants to the U.S., especially those from Asia.
"Suddenly, out on the street, gunfire exploded! Tran quickly pushed himself upright out of the chair, grabbed Madam Anh by the arm, and propelled the two of them in the direction of the hallway entrance to the living room. As they reached the hall, the large picture window of the living room exploded. A whooshing sound, like a barbecue igniting, sucked the air in a gust from the room, and the entire wall behind them burst into flames . . . "
