Flight from Hell
Paul Tessel
Paul Tessel lived a self-proclaimed idyllic life in Latvia. A happy child, even with anti-Semitism subtly surrounding him, Paul and his family were not prepared for the explosion of communism and the terror that ensued with WWII. Paul and his brother Zale fled their hometown to escape. Flight From Hell is the story of their struggle to survive and to stay together-at any cost. As the two run from city to city to evade the Nazis, the police, and even ordinary citizens who sell their souls to communism, they never lose their senses of humor, their wills to survive, and, most importantly, their hope.
That a world like this could ever exist-and, in some places, still does-is remarkable; that Paul can tell this story with such a clear voice and keen mind, considering all he went through, is astounding. Flight From Hell is both.
"Men, women, and children of all nationalities and religions had spread themselves out within a radius of a few hundred meters from the station. Police and secret agents ran around like frenzied mice, trying to listen in on conversations and examine people's luggage. It was not a reassuring sight.
"After a while we queued up to get our tickets, which meant pushing and shoving and knocking other people out of the way. How I had changed! Never in a million years would I have behaved that way back home, but war is war. We were living in a world where only the strong could survive-and I was determined to be one who endured."
Bio: PAUL TESSEL lives in Southern California. Flight From Hell is his first novel.
