Escape from Mexico
Lewis Horton
Escape from Mexico is a true account of a young American's harrowing adventures in a Mexican prison in 1964. After months of training exercises for the Army in the dull Mojave desert, the author and a friend head for Mexico in search of some action-and get more than they'd bargained for. Thrown into jail for possession of someone else's marijuana, Horton must find a way to escape before he dies of starvation, fever...or stabbing.
In the yard, peddlers set up tables and booths. At night they'd take their stuff back to the tank. Next morning, put it out again... Vendors sold food, clothing, cigarettes, bric-a-brac. We could buy a can of Spam, some wilted radishes, and dope, without leaving the yard. No guards were inside between roll calls. Prisoners ran the place. At the laundry booth, girls washed clothes. They were actually transvestites. From a distance they looked good, until you noticed biceps popping out of their short sleeved blouses. It was rumored they did things beside wash. Danny suggested I take my clothes to the laundry. For two weeks I hadn't taken off my shirt, pants, socks or underwear....
Review: "In witty and sharp-eyed prose, Lewis Horton takes the reader on an often hilarious tour of hell." -Rick DeMarinis , author of The Voice of America and The Year of the Zinc Penny
"A contemporary cautionary tale told with wit and humor, Escape From Mexico is the best argument for not smoking I've ever heard! I couldn't put it down! We've all met Lewis - somewhere, sometime. Within each of us lives the moment in which we acted without thought, without considering what 'might' happen, what 'could' happen if... Let Lewis tell you how it really was-and how it all could go so grippingly WRONG." -Carol Cullar, Editor, The Maverick Press
Bio: LEWIS HORTON has worked as a truck driver, ironworker, real estate agent, property manager, and oyster pirate in San Pablo Bay.
