Carnival of Animals, The
Robert L. Smith , Fran Williams Smith
The Carnival of Animals is an eclectic recounting of personal experiences with animals we will never forget. More than an account of cute animals, this is a book that explores the value of life itself. Over their many years together, the Smiths have learned from their animal friends to distinguish what is truly important in a life well lived. They've been taught lessons about patience, loyalty, affection, bravery, humor, and tenacity from a revolving menagerie of animals both domestic and wild. In addition to numerous cats and dogs, the Smith back yard in the Berkeley, California hills is regularly visited by raccoons, skunks, opossums, deer, even a coyote - a veritable carnival of animals.
Review: "An honest account of the joy and the occasional sadness of a life-long association with animals, both wild and domestic. Anyone who shares their home and environment with animals will enjoy this collection of stories. A pleasant and heart-warming read." - Richard Hack, DVM, Codornices Veterinary Clinic, Albany, CA
"A delightful parade of engaging personalities that arouse fond memories for all friends - both animal and human - known across a lifetime. Written in the style of James Herriot, my family loved the adventures and misadventures that produced laughter, tears, and in the process a valuable introspection about relationships." - Dale R. Brown, Ph.D., Colonel, US Army and Professor, National Defense University, Washington, D.C.
"The unique relationships that the Smiths have nurtured with their animals, both wild and domestic, over the past 50 years in the Berkeley Hills is a story rich in human values, whimsical antics and animal devotion. Their story will capture the fancy of any animal lover." - Corinne Lewis, Community Representative, Alpine Elementary School District, Pine Valley, California
"This is a love about humans and non-humans alike. A reader need never have had a pet or lived in the environs of furry creatures to appreciate the wonders of The Carnival of Animals. - Judith Friedman, Attorney, Department of Justice, Washington, D.C.
