Blue Scarab, The
Shirley Rogers Reinhart
What happens when you combine three generations of Minnesota women with the canals of Venice, then throw in a jewel thief? The answer to this strange alchemy lies in The Blue Scarab. This travel mystery follows the experiences of Hattie Ellis, a widow; her daughter Anne Benedict; and Anne's daughter, Elizabeth (a.k.a. "Wolfy") as they spend a month touring through England and Western Europe. Like all good travel tales, this one is filled with intrigue and romance, as well as touching insights and amusing details. By turns frightening and hilarious, The Blue Scarab is an interesting twist on the American in Paris and an Ian Fleming adventure.
"As the door opened, I started to step in and was rudely pushed ahead. To my horror, a man in a tan raincoat stepped in behind me. The door shut, and I saw that he had a knife in his hand. The hair on the back of my neck stood up and my stomach turned over. It is the man from the boat and he is going to kill me, I thought, terrified. I was paralyzed and couldn't move.
"He had a hat pulled down almost to his eyes, and I couldn't see much of his face. I saw the flash of a bright blue earring as he reached out for me with his empty hand and I could almost feel that knife in his other hand. I couldn't take my eyes off that knife. It was a wicked-looking thing with a very thin blade. I could almost feel it entering my body."
Bio: SHIRLEY ROGERS REINHART revisited England and Europe for an extended tour with her daughter and granddaughter after her husband's death in 1993. With encouragement from her family, Reinhart began to write and discovered a "consuming love" for it. She is currently finishing her second novel.
