Berkeley's Best Buddhist Bookstore
Charlene Anderson
When bank vice president John Allen travels to Berkeley to find his runaway teenage daughter, Alice, he encounters former hippie and Buddhist monk Tom Jenkins in Berkeley's Best Buddhist Bookstore. Despite John's contemptuous and condescending attitude, Tom, who is in desperate need of a job, reluctantly agrees to hire one to look for Alice. The two are met by John's older daughter, Judy, who tries to talk John out of his quest, fearing his domineering manner will drive Alice away for good. As events escalate, John is mugged; Alice shows up and quickly disappears again; Tom develops distinctly un-monklike feelings for Judy; and John and Judy are forced to take a closer look at their family and personal relationships, and especially themselves.
Review: "Charlene Anderson makes a strong debut with Berkeley's Best Buddhist Bookstore-a fast-paced yet complex novel of love, loss, and family." -Donna Levin, author of Get That Novel Started! and Get That Novel Written!
Bio: CHARLENE ANDERSON has a Masters in English Literature and Research Psychology, and currently works for UCSF. This is her first novel.
