Part stream of consciousness, part emotional allegory, The Ascending Star was written as a testimony to the author's experiences during WW II, which included prisoner of war. In it Anna, a German gentile, fights for her life-she has been held captive for being a "Jew lover," and her townspeople are hesitant to help her, even when her life is at risk. Through flashbacks the reader gets to know Anna and the sense of loss that pervades and torments her as she struggles to survive.
