Ascending Star, The
Donald Young
Part stream of consciousness, part emotional allegory, The Ascending Star was written as a testimony to the author's experiences during WW II, which included prisoner of war. In it Anna, a German gentile, fights for her life-she has been held captive for being a "Jew lover," and her townspeople are hesitant to help her, even when her life is at risk. Through flashbacks the reader gets to know Anna and the sense of loss that pervades and torments her as she struggles to survive.
Review: " I found the story moving. I have always admired Young's ability to find the telling detail. There was nothing in the story that did not sound authentic." - Dr. Peter Kenez, author Cinema and Soviet Society and Varieties of Fear: Growing up Jewish Under Nazism and Communism
"The Ascending Star is a thought-provoking, uncompromising tale-powerful in its simplicity, eloquent in its lack of bitterness and irony in dealing with the dark side of our humanity." Morton Marcus, author The Brezhnev Memo
Bio: DONALD J. YOUNG received his BA from Princeton and his MA from Harvard. His first novel, The Reunion, was published by the New International Library Inc. and sold very well. His second novel, The Lion's Share, was a fictional account of his experience in the battle of the bulge.
