Angel's Oracle

Gary Bolick

Gary Bolick's Angel's Oracle begins with the legend of four "first batch" angels, who neither wished to join Lucifer's rebellion nor remain in heaven. Set in Angel, Mississippi, 1959, it's a watershed time, seeming closer to a century before than a few years hence when civil rights would gain a foothold in the South. Protagonist Virgil Burnett, one-eighth black with skin the color of alabaster, embodies decency and nobility in his exercise of free will. Opposing Virgil's influence is the local sheriff, Billie Sloan, twisted, cruel, hate-filled, but understandably pathetic. Seasonal winds, the sounds - the music of the angels - shape a huge marble formation given the name Angel's Oracle by white citizens and Moses' Rock by blacks. Hate vies with love, antebellum slavery tradition with equality as the angels communicate their plight to the world.

Bio: GARY BOLICK was born and raised in North Carolina. He graduated from Wake Forest University with a degree in French. Bolick has tried all sorts of jobs, from being a taxi driver to a flight attendant to a writer. He lives with his wife and two sons.
