And The Goat Cried

Henry Buchanan

In AND THE GOAT CRIED Henry Buchanan plumbs everyday life in the South to discover moments of earthy humor and quiet illumination. Written in a style that aims to be both colloquial and modest, these tales focus on ordinary people reacting to exceptional dilemmas. In "The Glue Pot," Superintendent of Schools Henry Gooseberry employs one very sticky solution to smooth the ideological contradictions between a science textbook and the Bible. In "The Hanging Tree", when a convict's last request is to choose the tree for his own hanging, the question to ponder is not whether the punishment fits the crime but whether any tree could fit such a purpose. "Caleb's Body" leaves one wondering who should feel ashamed when a black man comes to claim the body of his son at the railroad station but can't afford the $23.85 for the shipping.

Review: "As a southern born poet I recommend And the Goat Cried to readers of any region who want to know the down home truth about the way it was for most Americans born before 1940. And since laughter is pure medicine, I prescribe these stories which I found as warm-hearted as they are healing."
- Al Young, author of Sitting Pretty and The Sound of Dreams Remembered

"I know the people in Henry Buchanan's stories. I've known them all my life. This is a real world, drawn with honesty and a clear eye."
- Miller Williams, Professor of English The University of Arkansas
